The “Young Orpheus” Festival Celebrates Its Fifth Anniversary
Founded in 2019, the “Young Orpheus” Festival has quickly become a bright annual tradition, bringing together young musicians from across Cyprus and beyond. The festival aims to support and develop children’s and youth musical creativity.
The inaugural event gathered 43 participants, but by 2024, the number had grown to 175. Each young talent receives a commemorative prize and diploma, marking an important milestone in their musical journey and inspiring them to continue learning and return to the festival stage.
Even during the lockdown, the festival maintained its vibrant spirit, moving online and welcoming participants from various European countries, Russia, and the United Kingdom.
Until 2024, the festival focused solely on instrumental performances, but starting in 2025, new categories will be introduced: “Classical Vocal,” “Pop and Jazz Vocal,” “Folk Music” (vocal and instrumental, solo and ensemble), and “Percussion Instruments.”
During its existence, the festival is entering its second collaboration with an orchestra. The first experience took place with the symphony orchestra of the music lyceum under the direction of Petros Stylianou. At that memorable meeting, the maestro shared with young listeners the secrets of the structure of a symphony orchestra, revealed the intricacies of a conductor’s work, and held an open rehearsal. The children had the unique opportunity not only to get to know musical instruments better but also to stand at the conductor’s podium themselves, feeling like part of this amazing world of music.
In its fifth, anniversary year, the festival is opening a new chapter of collaboration with an orchestra.
This time, a professional chamber “Commandaria Orchestra,” conducted by Maestro Francis Guy will take the stage, and young talents—participants of past years of the festival—will perform as soloists at the Markideio Theatre on May 18, 19:00. This event will not only be a celebration of music but also mark the beginning of a new tradition and symbolic bridge between generations, combining the experience of masters and the energy of young talents.
